I have had approximately two months of treading water since we moved house. I can't really explain the lack of forward momentum other than that there's been a feeling temporariness while we've been here. I have little doubt that this has been down to the circumstances of the last six months or so with the financial and home issues and having to admit publicly for the first time that I'd got things wrong to my parents. It's a humbling experience.
You can make progress in an instant by making a decision now but I wasn't comfortable with big changes for some time. I guess that was my way of getting a sense of stability. I needed to feel settled.
I don't know what it was but I felt I had to be ready to get kick started and that's now happened. I've begun making contacts on a business networking sites, I have acquired some freelance design and marketing work and most importantly, I am putting my family first.
I want us to experience life rather than just exist so we are doing different things. Where at one time it was 'no, we can't afford to do that' and end up staying at home we now look at what we can do to enrich our lives. It doesn't have to be much but if it's different, it makes a difference.
Last Sunday we went to deepest, darkest Suffolk to a recording studio which is located in the base of an old windmill. It still has the original wooden beams but the sails are long gone. The music was recorded by a friend and it was a privilege to be present as the musicians came up with ideas as they worked.
We then went to the coast to a place we've never been before called Walberswick and just had fun. We ran, we laughed, we splashed and made sand castles - it was fantastic!
I think it was significant that we arrived here because when we set off from home we didn't know where we would end up. Walberswick is one of the most Easterly points in the British Isles and only accessible by one road. As we stood on the waters edge looking out to sea, about 99.9% of the British population was behind us. This felt symbolic somehow.
The joy of hearing the children say: 'Thank you for the best day ever' is a reward like you cannot imagine. We didn't spend a fortune on computer games or amusement parks - it was just us and it just felt terrific.
